Obituary: John Reid

It is with an extremely heavy heart the Directors, management and staff of SAPMA, announce the sad passing of John Reid.

John, after completing his Degree in organic Chemistry at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, with first class honours, joined the paint industry in the UK in 1960. He joined Plascon Evans paint in South Africa in 1969. He moved to Johannesburg and joined AECI /Dulux in 1983, after spending 11 years with Fergusson’s paint in Durban.

John served on the SAPMA Technical Committee from 1986, firstly as Chairman until 2000 and then as a member until his death. He was also a valuable member of the SABS Technical Committee.

It was in 2000 that John became the Senior Tutor for SAPITI and began training the Technology Programme for the development of Paint Chemists in South Africa. His reputation as a valued tutor and instructor is   unequalled and 1000’s if not 100’s of SAPITI students have had the privilege of be instructed and introduced into the Coatings world under the careful guidance of John.

He will be sorely missed not only as a valuable colleague, but a friend.
